The Mockers story starts in 2024 with Judy McDermott (77) or Judy King as she has become, lying in her bed at the Watford Peace Hospice. She has terminal cancer with not long left to live. Judy is the main character in the Mockers story which focuses on the period 1963 when she was just 17 to 1966 when she marries Terry King.
Judy’s granddaughter Patsy (17) is by Judy’s bedside and has been there all night. Judy wakes and struggles to breath. Slowly but deliberately, she asks Patsy to come back that evening at 4pm as she has a lot to tell or explain to Patsy.
Patsy reluctantly leaves the room to go to college concerned about her grandmother. Apart from her uncle James and his family who are currently away on holiday in the USA, her grandmother is all the family that she has got. Patsy’s grandmother and her “Papa Terry” (Judy’s husband who died 5 years earlier) brought Patsy up after her parents and brother were killed in a car crash on the M6 when Patsy was just six months old. She survived the pile up as she was in her carry cot and escaped without any injuries.
Patsy left the hospice intrigued to understand what her grandmother has to tell her. She texts her new boy friend “Brad”, who she believes to be the special one, to say that she will meet him at the hospice at 8pm after seeing her grandmother.
This song; Explain, will play during the opening scene of the movie. It’s a tearful song so get your tissues ready.
