The Crown pub at the corner of Theobald Street and the High Street in Borehamwood was a regular haunt for Mods every Friday night in the early sixties. Often it was a boy’s night out. A chance to show off the latest fashions, listen to great songs on the juke box and sometimes even live music. Lots of beer would be drunk. The Crown was rarely visited by Rockers except when looking for trouble.
This wild, almost crazy song captures the moment when Rockers arrive intent on getting their own back on Terry and his mates for the car park revenge prank at the Busy Bee. When such trouble boiled over in those days the fights often resulted in substantial damage to the pub. One eyewitness to a similar event at the time described the scene as; “something straight out of the wild west”.
Furniture became weapons, mirrors, windows smashed, and much blood was spilt. It was unusual for real weapons to be used, although, chains, knuckle duster and occasionally knives would be drawn. Police raids to break up the bedlam were commonplace.
Humdrum Rumble (at the Crown) is an energetic rock song that captures the drama of a chaotic fight between Mods and Rockers. The lyrics directly point to an event in the Mockers book, you can almost feel the ruckus listening to this track.
