This haunting song reflects Judy’s devastating experience of being banished to Ireland to have her baby in secret, to have it adopted and return as if nothing had happened. Unwanted pregnancies of this nature were often treated harshly by parents who had lived through a war but could not cope with the embarrassment in their communities. Men, at this time dictated outcomes, women had little or no say in such matters.
Worse still was the Magdalene Laundry scandal that Judy was subjected to when her aunt could not cope with having her around the house. Staying at this shocking institution, Judy worked hard for her keep right up until she gave birth. The Nuns that delivered her baby took it from her not even allowing her to see her baby girl’s face. The baby was immediately sold for adoption to a prearranged happy couple.
Judy returned to Letchmore Heath completely emotionally wrecked by the experience. She was, however, determined to put her life back on track hardened by the whole dreadful episode.
Lost is a song that tries to capture the desperation that Judy must have endured.
