This track is as relevant today as it should have been back in the early sixties. Sexual consent is vital and nonconsensual sex is a modern polite phrase for RAPE! The lyrics of this very sad song pull no punches as Judy prepared to meet with Jimmy, determined to tell him that she has moved on, is in love with someone else and that they can never be a couple again.
During this encounter things get out of hand. Despite her demonstration to push him away saying NO, Jimmy forces himself onto Judy. Today the world is very different to that of the early sixties. The internet and smart phones have given teenagers the opportunity to witness explicit sex scenes leaving nothing to the imagination. This can and does raise expectations about sex especially for young boys.
When a girl says NO, she means NO! The consequences of ignoring this can and must be serious. Back in the sixties, nobody would have believed a teenaged girl that she fought back and said NO. Especially a girl who had already experienced one unwanted pregnancy.
This song is meant to capture the distress caused by such an action, nonconsensual sex or RAPE! If it goes some small way to achieving that, then at least boys may think twice in the future.
